Forest School Sessions
Forest School Sessions
At Lordsmead Pre-school our children can take part in Forest School sessions where they learn to care for their local environment and the world around them. The sessions take place in the woods within St Peter’s Academy grounds.
We believe that our children should feel safe and are encouraged to manage and take risks whilst providing opportunities for them to learn through self-initiated play.
All areas of the EYFS are covered during outdoor learning as children learn about the world around us and Improve and develop their social skills, problem solving and build on communication, language and literacy. It promotes children’s well-being and physical fitness including fine and gross motor skills.
Children use their imagination and learn Mathematical skills in a fun way which promotes teamwork whilst supporting and caring for each.
The following are some examples of activities that we have done:
We have read the book Yucky worms learning about the different parts of a worm and that they have 5 hearts. The children had great fun lifting logs and carefully putting the worms into a bug viewer to explore the different parts of the worm. It was fantastic hearing that the children had been re-telling their family all about what they had learnt and how much the children had enjoyed taking part.
We also looked at a story with Winnie the Pooh in and talked about the importance of bees and that they made honey. Several of the children hadn’t tried honey before so the next week we had honey sandwiches for our snack, which all the children tried.
We had fun reading the story Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs, talking about the dinosaurs and learning their names. We hid numbers in the environment and working together in pairs we gave the children a bucket and a number so they could put the correct number of dinosaurs into their bucket.
We have access to a running track, and it is lovely not only watching the children’s fitness and stamina improve over time but their teamwork and seeing them work together motivating each other on.
Children learn through play and we can’t wait to get outside wearing the appropriate clothes for the weather and have fun.
